1/2: Dear Wädenswil - a warm welcome!

2/3: The three modules

Welcome to a new, fresh learning environment. My name is Neil, and I’ve been working in film production since 2012, specializing in soundtracks, sound design, voiceovers (narration), and audio mixing. I also teach audiovisual production at the university level, guiding BSc students through the audiovisual production workflow. However, my professional journey began with the guitar and bass. They ultimately led me to all these places — from strings to streaming.

This offering was born out of conviction and joy — and a belief in a new kind of concept: the merging of disciplines (guitar & bass, music production, and content creation), which for me have been inseparably connected for over twenty years (crazy, right?). Today, we live in a time where this concept is not only relevant but also mainstream-ready. We live in the age of social media, content, and personal branding — even in music. Let me present it to you this way (swipe left):

I’d love to go on a journey of discovery with you—guitar or bass in hand. You set the destination, and I’ll be your coach. Here are just a few possible destinations: chords, fingerpicking/fingerstyle, your favorite songs, harmony and music theory (and how to apply it in practice), techniques and technical skills, sound, funk (16th notes), blues (bendings, slide), jazz (improvisation), prog metal (13/8 time), folk (strumming), Bossa Nova (Brazilian jazz), ear training, rhythm, music/audio/video technology (because it’s 2025), acoustic guitar (steel-string and nylon), electric guitar, electric and acoustic bass (fretted and fretless), and so on and so forth.

Every lesson is recorded in both video and audio. I’ll make these available to you via cloud as video files. Most of the teaching materials (PDFs, jam tracks, lead sheets, videos, etc.) are self-produced and stored there as well. We always connect guitar and bass playing with production skills.

An absolute first for Wädenswil! Together, we'll learn how to produce music and/or audio content. The goal can range from music production to sound design, podcast production, or voiceover training. Learning how to use both software and hardware, and connecting creativity with technology, is at the core of this course.

Lesson content: DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations aka music software), audio and MIDI, recording, monitoring, editing, session management, room acoustics, mixing and mastering for streaming platforms (Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music), ear training, psychoacoustics, frequency theory, mono/stereo/multichannel, formats, sound design, plugins, uploading, integrating music into social media content, and optimizing your own projects. Each lesson is recorded—both screen and audio interface—and made available to you via cloud.
Lessons are available on all common DAWs. Tons of self-produced teaching materials—PDFs, soundtracks, sessions (including from professional projects), and videos—are provided via cloud access.

Another absolute first for Wädenswil—one that I, as a father, almost consider essential for every young person growing up today: the very first content production course in Wädenswil. Content: Fun, hands-on learning of audiovisual production skills using smartphones, laptops, tablets, DSLR cameras, as well as hardware and software. Portfolio building, syncing audio and video, framing, vertical and horizontal formats, image and audio resolution, recording and export formats, exposure, film editing, 2D animation, fonts and typography, branding, sound design, music selection and integration, mobile production apps, uploading, social media savviness/awareness, and more. At the heart of it all: the joy of creating audiovisual content. Social media can absolutely be used in a creative, meaningful, and fun way. Whether you want to build a portfolio and dive into topics like brand identity, strategy, and monetization — or just create freely and spontaneously — I support both approaches equally.

Some of you might already know me. My name is Neil, I’m 39 years old, and I work as an audio producer and university lecturer. But some people simply know me as Felix and Silas’ dad. I started teaching myself to play guitar and bass when I was 15. I took it pretty seriously and with a lot of discipline—borderline obsessive. Because guitar and bass quickly turned into jazz, prog metal, technique, expression, Beethoven, Stravinsky, rhythm, harmony, composition, and—very importantly—production.

There was this time in the early 2000s when music and computers truly began to merge. And from there, it was just a small leap to soundtracks and sound design. And, of course, film. And voiceover work—writing, speaking, and producing in multiple languages. All of these things are now part of my professional life and income. The skills I developed through music have deeply enriched my personality, my education (commercial diploma, vocational baccalaureate, university of applied sciences), my career (mera.film, teaching, coaching), and my life as a whole.

It’s a gift that keeps on giving!
